Below is a listing of the classes developed for the CyberLynx computer literacy offering.

Computer Basics

Beginner’s introduction to computer terms, screens and the keyboard. Learn basic vocabulary and get mouse and screen practice.

Level:    Novice

Using Internet Explorer - Part I

Get around the Internet with your Microsoft Internet Explorer browser. Learn the features of the Internet Explorer browser and how to connect to the Internet, print Web pages and save Web pages.

Using Internet Explorer - Part II

Learn more about using Microsoft Internet Explorer browser.  Use it to search for information on the Web, create a favorites list, and use and modify your history folder.

Suggested Prerequisites: Exploring the Web

Windows 7 Introduction

Learn how to navigate Microsoft's new Windows 7 operating system.  Try out the new features and find out how to do all the things you used to do in Windows XP, especially using the Task Bar, Start menu and customizing the desktop. (Assumes some experience with previous Windows versions.)

Google Classes

Googling

Learn how to use Google, especially the advanced search functions.  Use an instructor-guided set of exercises developed at UC-Berkeley.

Googling and Beyond

Explore Google features beyond searching, like account setup, calendar, building an iGoogle home page, using maps and many other advanced features. And there's a web site evaluation checklist to help you judge the value of the information you find.

Exploring Google

Watch how Google works, especially the advanced search functions.  This is a demonstration class showing you Google search operations as well as other features and functions available from Google.

Suggested Prerequisites: Exploring the Web \ Finding and Managing Information

iGoogling

Learn how to create a customized home page using Google. Organize all your favorite sites with bookmarks along with cool gadgets, news sites, stock quotes, and weather info (to name a few) that you use all the time. Why? Because this page is available to you from any computer you might use.  So, if you travel or use public access computers or just want the cool gadgets (games, pictures, satellite tracking, earthquake watch) offered, this solution is for you!

Managing and Organizing Photos

Use Google's Picasa software, a free download, to find, view, organize, do minor editing and create slideshows for your digital photos.  This is a two-part class.  Bring your own laptop if you want to install Picasa and manage photos on it.

 Get a Google email account, navigate the screens, and use email, contacts
         and calendar features.

Get a hotmail email account, navigate the screens, and use email, contacts and calendar features.

Using advanced features of your Hotmail account including text formatting, contact groups and calendar features.

Managing Files and Folders

Use Windows Explorer to find, view, open, create, rename, move, copy, sort and delete files and folders on your hard drive.

Microsoft Excel Classes

Learn the basics of Microsoft Excel.  This is a series of three classes to learn the basics of Excel.  Each class will build on the skills learned in the previous one.  It includes:  the basics of creating a spreadsheet; creating formulas; editing and formatting; and printing.  Class materials are from Microsoft's Unlimited Potential Excel course.

Microsoft PowerPoint Classes

Learn the basics of Microsoft PowerPoint.  This is a series of two classes to learn the basics of PowerPoint.  Each class will build on the skills learned in the previous one.  It includes:  the basics of creating a presentation; editing and formatting; and printing a presentation.

Microsoft Word Classes

Learn the basics of Microsoft Word.  This is a series of three classes to learn the basics of Microsoft Word.  Each class will build on the skills learned in the previous one.  It includes:  the basics of creating a document; editing and formatting; cutting, pasting and copying text; setting margins, headers/footers and tabs; using graphics (clip art, word art, & pictures.

MP3 Players - Downloading iTunes and Podcasts

Learn about finding and downloading music and podcasts to your MP3 Player.

Level:    Beginner

Suggested Prerequisites: Finding and Managing Information & Exploring the Web & Managing Files and Folders

Navigating Your Computer Keyboard and Screens

Getting around the Windows XP environment and the desktop.  Using a mouse, keyboard special keys, and shortcuts.

Outlook Express – Part 1

Learn about creating and sending a message, reading and replying to messages, dealing with attachments, jazzing up your email and maintaining an address book using the popular application of Outlook Express.

Level:    Intermediate

Outlook Express – Part 2

Learn about managing folders, maintaining multiple email addresses/accounts, using views, sorting and searching.

PC Security

Learn about virus, spam, spyware and firewall software to protect your PC.

Photoshop Elements

Exploring Photoshop Elements class is a demonstration of the features and functions of Adobe Photoshop Elements.  It will cover straighten, crop, use of layers, adjusting hue and saturation, fixing red eye, using text and borders, retouching and printing.  A follow-on lab or workshop where students will bring their own photos and try what they've learned with instructor(s) available to guide them is planned.

Level:  Intermediate - at least

Prerequisites:  None required but at least an intermediate computer user.  Google's Picasa Photo Management Class a plus.

Exploring Photoshop Elements Course Materials

Social Networking: Using Facebook & Twitter

Find out about digital social networking and how you might use it.  See Facebook and Twitter at work.  Get your own accounts if you wish.  Use your computer's browser and the Internet to connect up with friends and family.

Level:    Intermediate

Suggested Prerequisites: Finding and Managing Information & Exploring the Web

Skype: Using and Downloading

Find out how to download and use Skype to make free computer to computer phone calls.  Get your own accounts if you wish.  Use your computer's browser and the Internet to connect up with friends and family.

Explore the functions of the library’s computers, including the on-line catalog, the browser and the software and hardware available.
